The Historic Grand Prix 2013: Persbericht

The Historic Grand Prix
 2013
(Press release)

13-08-13

~ We don't just see a lot of very special cars during the Historic Grand Prix Zandvoort, but some famous Dutch drivers as well.
What about two-times Indy 500 winner Arie Luyendijk, WTCC star Tom Coronel and former Formula 1 driver Robert Doornbos? And then there is Adrian van Hooydonk, chief designer of BMW, who will drive one of the Bavarian cars.
Meet them during the second edition of the Historic Grand Prix Zandvoort from 30 August to 1 September!
Arie Luyendijk rewrote the history books in 1990 when he won the famous Indy 500. Seven years later he celebrated victory again at the legendary Brickyard.
It will be the first time in sixteen years Luyendijk is racing at the Circuit Park Zandvoort. He takes place behind the wheel of a Bizzarrini 5300 GT and competes
in the NK Historical Touring Cars and GT's. “I'm looking forward to drive this beautiful car at the dune circuit,” Luyendijk says. “It has quite been a while since my last
appearance in Zandvoort. It was in 1997 at the so-called Marlboro Masters.
I did a demo in the car which I drove to victory in Indianapolis not long before.”
Round his own cornerIt's bizarre, but true: during the Historic Grand Prix Zandvoort it's up to Luyendijk to get to know the circuit. Back in 1997 the short interim-circuit
was still in use, but the track has been modernized since. Moreover, Luyendijk never rounded his own Arie Luyendijk Corner. Luyendijk knows 'Bos Uit' by heart and this corner was named after him in 2001. Not new to Luyendijk is the historic discipline of motorsport. “Occasionally, I drive in the United States with historic Grand Prix cars. The last race was in 2012, when I drove a Formula 1 car from McLaren that took part in the 1980 US Grand Prix in Austin.”

Tom Coronel The 1997 edition of the Marlboro Masters is not only famous for Luyendijk's demo, but also one of the highlights in the career of Tom Coronel. Coronel's victory in the Formula 3 race is etched in the memory of all Dutch race fans. Tom takes part in the Historic Grand Prix Zandvoort.
He was on course for victory together with David Hart last year during one of
the races for Gentlemen Drivers, but they had to settle for second place because
of technical glitches. This year Tom is back in action.

Robert Doornbos and Adrian van Hooydonk Robert Doornbos was active in Formula 1, ChampCars and A1 Grand Prix. During this Historic Grand Prix Zandvoort we can see Doornbos in action during the Youngtimer Trophy. This is a class for touring cars and GT's from 1966-1988. Doornbos drives the Porsche 911 SC / RS, in which team owner Raymond Touroul drove the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Adrian van Hooydonk is one of the drivers Doornbos has to beat. Normally, Van Hooydonk is leading the design department of the BMW Group, but this time he sits behind the wheel of a DTM BMW M3, which is provided by BMW Classic. BMW's top designer participates on track with Harm Lagaay, who worked for BMW before in the same function.
Lagaay also worked for Porsche.

Le Mans legendsThe organization of the Historic Grand Prix Zandvoort could already share the good news that three Le Mans legends are attending the event.
Just like last year former winners Gijs van Lennep and Jan Lammers join the party.
Jurgen Barth also comes to Zandvoort. Barth won the race in 1977 and drives a
Porsche 904  during the race of the Gentlemen Drivers.
